Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked Bitirhuya community in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, killing four residents and setting several houses ablaze.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday evening, came barely a week after insurgents reportedly killed 12 people in Nzangola village, Gombi Local Government Area of the state.
The terrorists were said to have stormed Bitirhuya between 5pm and 6pm on motorcycles, shooting sporadically and sending residents fleeing for safety.
Amid the chaos, four residents were reportedly shot dead by the attackers, while several houses were set ablaze.
The Chairman of Hong Local Government Council, Aliyu Sa’ad Yerima Hong, confirmed the attack during a visit to the affected community.
Hong commiserated with the families of the victims and assured residents that the government was taking steps to strengthen security and prevent further attacks in the area.
He urged residents to promptly report suspicious movements and individuals to security agencies, stressing the importance of community cooperation in the fight against insurgency.
The council chairman also warned those harbouring criminals, collaborating with insurgents or undermining peace in the area to desist from such acts.
He said anyone found aiding or abetting criminal activities would face the full force of the law.
Residents appealed to the Federal and Adamawa State governments to urgently intensify security operations in rural communities to protect lives and property and prevent further attacks.
