Two women and three men have been arrested in South Africa for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 25-year-old e-hailing driver in Cape Town.

The suspects, including women aged 23 and 34, allegedly abducted the driver after luring him to a meeting through one of the women he had met while working.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) disclosed the incident in a statement posted on its X handle on Sunday.

According to the police, the victim met one of the women the previous week while carrying out his e-hailing business, after which they exchanged telephone numbers and remained in contact.

Police said the woman later arranged to meet the driver, but when he arrived at the agreed location, she allegedly took him hostage with the help of her accomplices.

“Steenberg police rescued a 25-year-old e-hailing driver after he was raped and held at ransom by two female suspects and three males yesterday,” SAPS said.

The suspects allegedly contacted the victim’s brother and demanded R4,000 for his release.

The victim was subsequently traced through the tracking device in his vehicle, leading police to Southampton Road in Heathfield, where he was rescued.

The other suspects are three males aged 16, 42 and 48.

SAPS said all five suspects had been arrested and were expected to appear before the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 14.
