The Rivers State Government has taken over the full cost of treatment for Miss Amos Joy, a fire burn victim from Bille Community, who is receiving treatment at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), Port Harcourt.
The assurance was given by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, during a visit to the victim at the hospital.
Odu said she became aware of Joy’s condition shortly before the visit and commended the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr Vincent Nwachukwu, the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Prof. Chizindu Alikor, and the medical team for their prompt intervention.
She said the state government would bear all medical expenses incurred throughout the victim’s stay at the hospital.
The Deputy Governor also disclosed that she had provided financial assistance to Joy and her family to support them during the recovery period.
Nwachukwu said the Ministry of Health acted immediately after learning of the incident through online reports.
He explained that Joy was evacuated from the facility where she initially received treatment and transferred to RSUTH for specialised medical care.
The Permanent Secretary said the ministry would continue to monitor her treatment and ensure she receives the necessary attention.
On his part, Alikor assured that Joy was receiving comprehensive medical care at no cost to her or her family.
The RSUTH Chief Medical Director said the victim was responding positively to treatment and making steady progress towards recovery.
He added that the hospital’s medical team would continue to provide the necessary care until she is sufficiently recovered.
