A 40-year-old man, Akaninyene Eretus, arrested in Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, has allegedly confessed to detectives that he killed two men to avenge the deaths of his parents and two elder brothers during a communal crisis about 29 years ago.
According to the Cross River State Police Command, the suspect remains in custody and allegedly admitted responsibility for the killings of two victims identified as Okokon and Okon on May 24 and 25, 2026.
Police said two bodies believed to belong to the victims were recovered and deposited at a morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the suspect reportedly said he acted out of years of unresolved grief and a desire for what he described as justice.
Investigators said one victim was allegedly attacked while asleep and another with a machete.
Police also moved to dispel online reports claiming the suspect confessed to killing 30 people, describing such reports as unconfirmed and capable of creating unnecessary panic.
The command said investigations are ongoing and further legal action will depend on forensic findings and due process.
Residents were urged to rely on official updates and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
