The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial killings and abuse of power.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, sparked public outrage following the death of Ogidi during a police operation in the area.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Force said the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, had earlier directed the immediate withdrawal of all officers linked to the incident from the Delta State Command to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for accelerated disciplinary action.
According to the statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) concluded its investigation and found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in clear violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms.
The police described his conduct as unlawful, unprofessional, and a betrayal of the oath to protect lives and uphold the law.
Following the findings, the FDC recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable. The Inspector-General approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
The Force stated that after the completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers would be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the extrajudicial killing.
The IGP stressed that no police officer has the right to take life outside the provisions of the law, warning that any officer found guilty of such misconduct would face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.
He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that the matter would be handled with seriousness and that justice would not only be done but would be seen to be done.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, while reiterating the Forceβs commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizensβ rights and dignity.
