The Chief Executive Officer of The Albino Foundation Africa (TAFAfrica), Jake Epelle, has called for stronger measures to promote inclusive and credible elections in Nigeria following a strategic engagement with the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Epelle, alongside TAFAfricaβs Programme and Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) team, met with the INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, and the National Commissioner for Outreach and Inclusivity, Abdullahi Abdu Zuru.
The meeting focused on deepening electoral credibility by ensuring the full inclusion and active participation of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeriaβs democratic process.
Speaking after the meeting, Epelle stressed that inclusivity is central to democratic integrity, noting that elections that exclude any segment of the population weaken public trust and legitimacy.
According to him, every eligible Nigerian, regardless of physical ability, must have equal access to the electoral process, from voter registration to casting ballots and participation in governance.
He maintained that strengthening disability-friendly electoral systems would not only enhance fairness but also improve citizensβ confidence in the nationβs democracy.
βCredible elections must be inclusiveβanything less undermines democratic legitimacy,β Epelle stated.
TAFAfrica reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with INEC and other stakeholders to advance policies and practical reforms that guarantee equal political participation for PWDs across the country.
