The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the death of a serving police inspector, Jido Ahmed, who was allegedly involved in an armed robbery operation in Kontagora.
In a statement issued in Minna on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed that the inspector, attached to the 61 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Kontagora, was fatally wounded during a confrontation with a police patrol team.
According to the police, the incident occurred when Ahmed and an accomplice, who is currently on the run, reportedly attacked a filling station located behind the BCG Motor Park in Kontagora. The suspects allegedly arrived on a motorcycle, robbed the station attendant of an undisclosed sum, and shot him in the chest.
Following a distress report, a patrol team from โAโ Division in Kontagora swiftly mobilised and tracked the suspects to the Dadin Kowa area, where a gun battle ensued.
During the exchange of fire, one of the suspects was shot in the leg, overpowered, and disarmed. He was later identified as Inspector Ahmed. He was initially taken to the General Hospital in Kontagora for treatment before being transferred to the Police Clinic in Minna.
The police confirmed that he later died from injuries sustained during the encounter.
Meanwhile, the command said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplice, while a full investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities described the development as unfortunate, assuring the public that no individual found culpable would be shielded from justice.
