Rivers State Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, has paid a moving tribute to the late Amayanabo of Opobo Kingdom, King Dr. Dandeson Douglas Jaja, describing him as a father figure, patriot, and compassionate leader who dedicated his life to the service of humanity.
Prof. Odu spoke during a valedictory session organised by the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers in honour of the late monarch, held at the Council Auditorium in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
She said news of the King’s passing came as a shock, noting that despite earlier concerns about his health, many had remained hopeful and continued to pray for his recovery.
According to the Deputy Governor, she had visited the late monarch at the Intensive Care Unit, where he responded during prayers, raising hopes of recovery.
“We hoped it would translate into full recovery, but it pleased God to call him home, and we cannot question God,” she said.
Prof. Odu revealed that the late monarch shared a close personal bond with her, often treating her like his own daughter—an affection widely acknowledged by those around him.
She noted that both the King and his family consistently showed her unwavering support and dignity, especially during difficult moments, including the loss of her husband, mother, and elder sister.
Highlighting his selfless nature, she recalled how the monarch often adjusted his official schedule to honour her family’s important events, including attending her daughter’s wedding.
Reflecting on one of her final encounters with the late King in hospital, Prof. Odu said his wave gave her a sense of peace and hope—now a cherished memory.
She also recalled that during his 21st coronation anniversary in January 2025, the monarch conferred on her the prestigious traditional title, “Balolo of Opobo,” describing it as a rare honour.
The Deputy Governor further described the late King as a deeply devout man who dedicated his birthdays to praise and worship, underscoring his strong faith in God.
She commended the Council for organising a befitting tribute, noting that such gestures would help preserve the monarch’s legacy.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Council, Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, described the late Amayanabo as a pragmatic ruler, peace advocate, and statesman who served his people and the nation with distinction.
He urged traditional rulers to emulate the late monarch’s virtues of love, kindness, and temperance in the discharge of their duties.
Also speaking, the Rivers State Head of Service, Dr. Inyingi Brown, said the late King embodied wisdom, equity, and unwavering commitment to preserving the state’s cultural heritage.
She described him as a symbol of unity and a stabilising force whose leadership brought peace, progress, and pride to the Opobo Kingdom.
