Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State on Wednesday held a mass burial for no fewer than 75 residents killed during a deadly banditsβ attack on Tuesday evening.
A resident of the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Vanguard that the victims were buried en masse amid grief and heightened tension in the area.
The Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, Alhaji Abubabar Abdullahi Danladi, led a delegation to Woro and other affected communities on Wednesday to assess the scale of destruction and commiserate with survivors.
Speaking during the visit, the village head of Woro, Alhaji Umar Saliu Tanko, said he was away from home when the attackers struck. He disclosed that the bandits killed his daughter and two sons, and abducted his junior wife alongside two other persons.
According to him, the assailants arrived in large numbers and opened fire indiscriminately on residents, leaving many dead and several others missing.
Another survivor, Razaq Abdulazeez, said he narrowly escaped death after noticing unusual movement while returning home from work. He explained that residents fled in different directions, with some escaping into nearby bushes while others climbed trees to avoid being killed.
The attack has thrown the community into mourning, as residents called on security agencies and the government to urgently step up protection and prevent further assaults in the area.
