UK Issues Fresh Travel Warning for 30 Nigerian States

The United Kingdom has updated its travel advisory for Nigeria, warning its citizens against travelling to parts of 11 states and advising against all but essential travel to 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The latest advisory, issued by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on Thursday and updated on August 20, 2026, highlighted security concerns in several parts of the country.

The FCDO advised against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe states in the North-East, as well as Katsina and Zamfara states in the North-West.

It also warned against travel to the riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, describing them as river and swamp communities accessible by boat but not by road.

In addition, the UK advised its citizens to undertake only essential travel to Bauchi State, as well as Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto states.

The advisory also covered Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue states, alongside Abia, Anambra and Imo states.

Non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja, were also placed under the "all but essential travel" category.

The FCDO stressed that no destination could be guaranteed completely safe and urged travellers to study its travel guidance before visiting Nigeria.

It also advised intending visitors to research their destinations thoroughly, obtain adequate travel insurance and ensure their policies cover their planned activities and emergency expenses.

According to the UK government, travelling against official FCDO advice could invalidate travel insurance.

The updated advisory also contains guidance on entry requirements, health and safety, regional security risks, access to emergency assistance, as well as information on IVF, fertility treatment scams and overseas adoption.
