The Katsina State Government has revealed that fresh intelligence has emerged in the abduction of former Director of Defence Information, retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, and his wife, raising hopes of a breakthrough in efforts to secure their release.
The development comes as security agencies intensify coordinated operations to rescue the couple and other victims believed to be in the custody of kidnappers.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Bala Zango, the state government said preliminary investigations indicate that the abduction was a well-planned operation carried out by an organised criminal network rather than a chance attack.
According to the findings, the retired military officer and his wife were allegedly placed under surveillance and trailed from Kaduna before they were intercepted by their abductors.
The government said the targeted nature of the operation has provided investigators with critical intelligence that is now shaping ongoing security efforts.
Governor Dikko Radda has directed security agencies to accord the rescue mission the highest priority, expressing confidence that the renewed operation will produce positive results.
Authorities noted that the level of sophistication involved in the kidnapping suggests a changing pattern among criminal groups operating in the region, with greater emphasis on surveillance and planning before attacks.
To counter the threat, security agencies are deploying technology-driven surveillance tools, intelligence gathering mechanisms and coordinated field operations aimed at tracking the kidnappers and locating their victims.
The state government described the incident as a direct attack on a respected retired military officer who dedicated years of service to the nation, assuring that those behind the crime would be identified and prosecuted.
It further disclosed that collaboration among the Nigerian Army, the Police, intelligence agencies and other security formations has been strengthened to enhance the rescue efforts.
The government appealed to residents to support security agencies with credible information that could assist ongoing investigations and operations.
It also reassured the family of the retired general and members of the public that every available resource is being deployed to secure the safe release of the victims.
While expressing optimism over the progress made so far, authorities said the fresh intelligence has significantly boosted ongoing efforts and increased the chances of a successful outcome.
The government maintained that security operatives remain fully committed to ensuring that the abductors are brought to justice and that all victims regain their freedom.
