The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for ongoing infrastructural development projects across Rivers State, describing them as critical to the state's growth, modernization and economic advancement.

The commendation was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the union’s May 2026 Monthly Congress held at the Ernest Ikoli Press Centre, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt. The communiqué was signed by the Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee, Comrade King Onunwor; Secretary of the Committee, Comrade Felix Ikpotor; committee member, Dr. Florence N. Okon; Chairman of the NUJ Rivers State Council, Comrade Paul Bazia-Nsaneh; and Secretary of the Council, Dr. Ijeoma Tubosia.

Congress specifically applauded the Rivers State Government for ongoing road construction and rehabilitation projects, renovation of public schools, upgrading of public facilities and the redevelopment of the State Secretariat Complex. The union noted that the projects have continued to impact communities across the state and contribute to improving public infrastructure.

The journalists also praised the state government for facilitating the return of major construction firms, including Julius Berger and other contractors, to project sites across Rivers State. They urged the government to ensure the timely completion of the projects so that residents can fully benefit from the investments.

While commending the administration’s development efforts, Congress called for the sustenance of the current momentum through transparency, quality project execution and equitable distribution of projects across all local government areas of the state.

The Congress further expressed satisfaction with the relative peace that has returned to Rivers State following recent political developments and acknowledged the conciliatory steps taken by Governor Fubara to reduce political tension and foster reconciliation.

According to the communiqué, Rivers people expect their leaders to prioritize governance, economic growth and the delivery of democratic dividends rather than prolonged political disagreements capable of slowing development.

The NUJ also urged political leaders and their supporters to embrace dialogue, tolerance and mutual respect in the interest of peace and stability, warning against inflammatory rhetoric and divisive statements that could threaten the prevailing calm in the state.

On governance, the Congress expressed concern that the 2026 Appropriation Bill has yet to be presented before the Rivers State House of Assembly despite the year nearing its midpoint. It therefore urged Governor Fubara to expedite action on the budget presentation to provide the legal framework necessary for government expenditure and development planning.

The union also raised concerns over the proliferation of security checkpoints, allegations of extortion of motorists, illegal revenue collection, touting and the vandalisation of public infrastructure, calling on relevant authorities to take decisive action to address the challenges.

Congress reaffirmed the NUJ’s commitment to responsible journalism, ethical media practice and democratic accountability, while announcing plans to organize a high-level political debate and public accountability forum ahead of future elections in Rivers State.
