The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has submitted the draft legislation and 29 related amendment bills to the Federal Ministry of Justice for review and validation.

The submission was made on Monday to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, in accordance with the Working Group’s work plan.

The Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.

Gbajabiamila said the ministry would review the bills to ensure compliance with legislative drafting standards and conventions, as well as consistency with existing laws.

He said the ministry was expected to return the validated draft bills to the Working Group on or before October 30.

The Working Group would then undertake a final review before submitting the proposals to President Bola Tinubu, marking the completion of its assignment.

The proposed National Policing Bill seeks to establish the constitutional and legal framework for a dual policing system comprising the Federal Police Service and State Police Services.

According to the Working Group, the drafting process has been rigorous and transparent, with the objective of producing a comprehensive legislative proposal for the President’s consideration and eventual transmission to the National Assembly.

The process is running alongside the consideration of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, by the State Houses of Assembly.

The Working Group noted that the constitutional amendment process must be completed before the proposed National Policing Bill can be transmitted to the National Assembly.
