Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to serve Nigerians selflessly and responsibly, describing it as a debt they owe the nation.
Fubara gave the charge at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Nonwa-Gbam, Tai Local Government Area, while declaring closed the 2026 Batch C Stream I orientation course for corps members deployed to Rivers State.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Bureau, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Promise Oguzie, the governor urged the corps members to respect the cultures and traditions of their host communities.
He advised them to serve as role models, integrate peacefully into their communities and contribute to solving societal problems rather than creating them.
The governor also urged the corps members to take the post-camp Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme seriously to acquire the skills needed to create wealth and become employers of labour.
In his farewell address, the Rivers State NYSC Coordinator, Mr Moses Oleghe, commended the corps members for their resilience and commitment throughout the three-week orientation exercise.
He said the training had instilled in them the spirit of teamwork, national unity and active participation in nation-building, urging them to always put Nigeria first.
Oleghe expressed appreciation to Fubara for approving and implementing a revised state allowance for corps members serving in the state.
Under the arrangement, corps members posted outside Port Harcourt City and Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas will receive ₦35,000, while those serving in the two urban local government areas will receive ₦20,000.
He explained that the policy was designed to discourage excessive lobbying by parents and guardians seeking urban postings for their children and wards.
The NYSC coordinator also thanked security agencies and other stakeholders for their support in ensuring the successful completion of the orientation exercise.
He urged the corps members to be worthy ambassadors of the NYSC scheme and demonstrate discipline, dedication and professionalism at their respective places of primary assignment.
A total of 3,280 corps members, comprising 1,380 males and 1,900 females, successfully completed the orientation course.
