The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State has raised the alarm over an alleged plot to destroy a billboard or signpost associated with the Rainbow Coalition and falsely blame the party for the act.
The party expressed concern that the alleged plan could trigger unnecessary political tension and hostility in the local government area ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The NDC Publicity Secretary in Ikwerre LGA, Distg. CMR. Okemini Christian, raised the concern in a statement dated October 14, 2026.
The party said it considered the allegation serious and called on relevant authorities and political stakeholders to ensure that political activities in the area remained peaceful and lawful.
It stressed that it had no objection to the Rainbow Coalition mounting billboards or signposts in accordance with the law, but warned against any deliberate attempt to destroy such property and falsely implicate the NDC.
The party urged the coalition and its supporters to avoid actions capable of provoking political hostility, damaging property or creating unnecessary tension among political groups.
It maintained that political disagreements should be resolved through dialogue, lawful engagement and the ballot box rather than intimidation, destruction of property or false accusations.
The NDC also appealed to its members and supporters to remain calm, vigilant and law-abiding, urging them to document and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
It warned against taking the law into one's hands, regardless of political affiliation.
Addressing members of the Rainbow Coalition, the party said political competition should not be treated as a declaration of war, insisting that every political organisation had the right to promote its platform without undermining others.
The NDC further called for issue-based politics, peaceful coexistence and responsible leadership in Ikwerre LGA, warning against attempts to gain political advantage by manufacturing controversy or falsely accusing opponents.
Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful political participation, accountability and democratic values, the party urged all stakeholders to work together to prevent avoidable political tension.
It concluded by calling on political groups to mount their signposts lawfully, protect their property, respect their opponents and allow voters to determine their choices through the democratic process.
The statement was signed by Okemini Christian, Publicity Secretary of the NDC in Ikwerre LGA.
