Retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) have given the Federal Government, the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) until October 15, 2026, to fulfil agreements on gratuity payments and pension increases.
The retirees warned that failure to meet the deadline would trigger a peaceful mass protest in Abuja on November 2, 2026, to demand their withdrawal from what they described as an obnoxious pension scheme.
The ultimatum was contained in a statement signed by the National Coordinator and Chairman of the Kaduna State Chapter of the association, Mannir Lawal, and distributed to journalists in Kaduna.
The association expressed disappointment over the failure of the relevant authorities to implement commitments reportedly reached during negotiations with representatives of the retired officers.
According to the group, the authorities had assured them that the agreed measures would be implemented by the end of September 2026, but the deadline passed without the expected action.
The retirees said the Director-General of PENCOM had assured them of the payment of gratuity equivalent to 300 per cent of annual emoluments and an increase in monthly pensions to 100 per cent of the applicable salary benchmark.
They lamented that the failure to implement the agreements had weakened confidence in the negotiation process and heightened concerns over the welfare of retired officers.
The association stressed that its members had devoted their productive years to protecting lives and property, maintaining law and order, and safeguarding national security.
It warned that their patience and willingness to pursue dialogue should not be mistaken for weakness, urging the Federal Government, PENCOM and the IGP to take concrete and verifiable steps to honour the commitments.
The group described the planned protest as a last resort after exhausting available avenues for dialogue, assuring that the demonstration would be peaceful, lawful and orderly.
It also called on affected retirees across the country to remain united and prepare to join the protest if the authorities failed to meet the October 15 deadline.
