The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on Wednesday in Abuja on behalf of the Federal Government.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad, urging citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the nation’s journey since independence and the sacrifices of its founding fathers and heroines.
He said peace, unity and stability remained essential to Nigeria’s development, while calling on Nigerians to uphold patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength,” the minister said.
He added that collective determination remained the foundation for building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
Tunji-Ojo said the administration of President Bola Tinubu, through its Renewed Hope Agenda, remained committed to building a better Nigeria and honouring the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes past.
The minister also assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would continue to strengthen national security, improve public safety and create an environment where citizens can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.
He urged Nigerians to emulate the nation’s founding generation by demonstrating love for the country and contributing to its progress.
The Federal Government said this year’s Independence Day activities would be held on a low-key basis, with emphasis on reflection rather than elaborate celebrations.
It said the anniversary would provide an opportunity to remember the contributions, enduring legacies and sacrifices of the nationalists who fought for Nigeria’s independence from colonial rule.
According to the government, the achievements recorded by the country since October 1, 1960, were built on the foundation laid by the nation’s founding fathers and heroines.
The minister wished Nigerians a peaceful and meaningful 66th Independence Anniversary, urging citizens to remain committed to the unity and progress of the nation.
