The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday in their second Group L match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in Bissau.

The result handed coach Eric Chelle his first defeat since taking charge of the Nigerian national team.

Guinea-Bissau took the lead in the 15th minute when Franculino Dju curled a fine effort beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and into the far corner.

The Super Eagles struggled to create clear chances as the hosts defended their advantage and went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Chelle responded with two substitutions at half-time, introducing Moses Usor and Moses Simon for Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi respectively.

Nigeria, however, failed to turn the changes into goals as Guinea-Bissau continued to threaten on the counter.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 66th minute through Mama Baldé, putting further pressure on the Super Eagles.

Nigeria came close to pulling one back in the 87th minute when George Ilenikhena found himself in a promising position, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Djoco Embadje made a crucial close-range save.

Guinea-Bissau sealed a convincing victory in the fifth minute of stoppage time, with Álvaro Djaló scoring the third goal to complete a disappointing night for Nigeria.

The victory takes Guinea-Bissau to six points from two matches after their earlier 2-0 win over Tanzania.

Nigeria, meanwhile, remain on three points following their opening 2-1 comeback victory against Madagascar.

The Super Eagles will now need to regroup and secure positive results in their remaining Group L fixtures as the race for qualification continues.
