The famous Owu Egbelegbe, featuring the King’s Masquerade and the Queen’s Masquerade, took centre stage today as the final traditional rite preceding the coronation proper of His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja Jeki VI, Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026.

The two masquerades appeared together in a spectacular display of culture and tradition, bringing colour, rhythm and excitement to the streets of Opobo as traditional drums and energetic dances created an atmosphere of celebration.

Indigenes, visitors and guests gathered at the King Jaja Monument Square to witness the performance, marking another significant moment in the unfolding coronation festivities.

The appearance of the distinguished masquerades provided a fitting expression of the institution of traditional royalty, while symbolising the cultural splendour, unity and communal spirit surrounding the new reign.

Their performance also showcased the richness of Opobo Kingdom’s cherished masquerade traditions and underscored the enduring importance of preserving the cultural heritage for generations to come.

With the final traditional rites now concluded, attention turns to the much-anticipated coronation proper tomorrow, Saturday, September 26, 2026.

Having been preceded by a colourful blend of culture, tradition and communal celebration, Opobo Kingdom is now set to witness the historic coronation of Jeki VI.
