The Nigerian Army has commenced a review of its logistics capabilities as part of efforts to improve operational effectiveness in joint military operations.
The Chief of Transformation and Innovation, Maj.-Gen. Peter Okoye, disclosed this on Tuesday in Lagos at the 2026 Transformation and Innovation Needs Assessment Seminar.
The seminar, themed, “Logistics Needs Assessment: Developing the Competencies and Capabilities of Nigerian Army Logistics Staff for Operational Effectiveness in a Joint Environment,” focused on strengthening logistics support for military operations.
Okoye said the review had become necessary because of the changing nature of warfare and the increasingly complex security environment.
He noted that troops were operating in difficult terrains and demanding conditions, making timely and effective logistics support critical to sustaining operations.
According to him, logistics personnel must anticipate operational needs, coordinate resources and ensure sustained support for troops throughout different phases of military operations.
Okoye also highlighted the growing role of technology in military logistics, citing unmanned systems, precision capabilities, cyber operations, electronic warfare and data-driven technologies.
He said the seminar would assess available resources, improve maintenance and asset management, strengthen accountability and promote the integration of logistics planning into military operations.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, said the initiative was important given the security challenges confronting the country, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other asymmetric threats.
Shaibu, who was represented by the Corps Commander, Ordnance, Maj.-Gen. Abdullahi Ibrahim, stressed that effective logistics remained fundamental to successful military operations, regardless of the quality of operational plans or tactical proficiency.
He said participants were expected to develop practical recommendations to address identified logistics capability gaps.
Shaibu added that the outcome of the seminar would provide a roadmap for improving the competencies of logistics personnel and strengthening the Army’s institutional capacity to support current and future operations.
