Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and declared support for the party’s presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lawal formally joined the NDC in Abuja on Tuesday, about three months after resigning from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking at the event, Lawal said his decision was influenced by concerns over insecurity, hunger, ignorance and disease, which he said were affecting Nigerians.

He said those concerned about the country’s challenges should support a political platform that, in his view, represents the future and has Obi and Kwankwaso as its presidential and vice-presidential candidates.

Lawal said he looked forward to the 2027 elections and urged Nigerians to support efforts aimed at bringing about what he described as a better future for the country.

Receiving him into the party, NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, described Lawal as an experienced politician, mobiliser and activist.

Dickson said Lawal would play a leadership role in the party’s activities and campaigns across the North-East, adding that the NDC would rely on his experience to provide guidance to its candidates and campaign structures in the region.

Lawal’s move followed his resignation from the ADC in June, after he raised concerns about the conduct of the party’s presidential primary.

He had alleged that the primary process was manipulated in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and claimed that results were altered in some areas to benefit Atiku and his supporters.

Lawal subsequently left the ADC and has now joined the NDC as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections.
