Brighton & Hove Albion produced a stunning performance to defeat Premier League champions Arsenal 3-0 and end their perfect start to the season.
Pascal Gross opened the scoring before 19-year-old Charalampos Kostoulas and debutant Chema Andres completed the rout, handing Brighton their third consecutive league victory over Arsenal.
The result ended Arsenal’s hopes of winning their first eight matches of a season for the first time in 123 years. It was also their heaviest Premier League defeat since losing 3-0 to Brighton in May 2023.
Brighton, who have now scored 16 goals in five matches, continued their impressive run after previously defeating Coventry City and coming from two goals down to beat Manchester United in the EFL Cup.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta admitted his side were well below their usual standard.
“Credit to Brighton for what they have done. I think we were very far from our level,” Arteta said.
Villa end winless run against Spurs
Aston Villa recorded their first league victory of the season with a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur, extending manager Unai Emery’s perfect record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Johan Manzambi put Villa ahead in first-half stoppage time before setting up Nicolas Jackson for the second goal.
Emiliano Buendia added a third with a spectacular long-range strike, while Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke scored late goals for Spurs.
Tottenham’s defeat extended their difficult start, with the club managing only two points from their opening five league matches.
Coventry claim first win
Coventry City ended a run of four consecutive defeats with a 1-0 victory, courtesy of Jay Dasilva’s first Premier League goal for the club.
Dasilva controlled goalkeeper Carl Rushworth’s long pass before calmly finishing to give the promoted side their first league goal and victory of the campaign.
The result also ended Coventry’s 25-year wait for a Premier League goal.
Everton remain unbeaten
Everton maintained their unbeaten start to the season after defeating 10-man Ipswich Town 1-0.
Thierno Barry scored his fifth goal in seven matches when he diverted James Tarkowski’s effort into the net in the 11th minute.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford then produced several important saves to preserve Everton’s lead after Ipswich were reduced to 10 men following Fatawu’s second yellow card.
Everton have now started a season unbeaten through seven matches for only the third time this century.
Newcastle hold off Hull
Newcastle United ended Hull City’s unbeaten start with a 2-1 victory after scoring twice inside the opening seven minutes.
Joe Willock opened the scoring in the third minute after being set up by Harvey Barnes, who then assisted Lewis Hall four minutes later.
Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back for Hull, who pushed for an equaliser but could not complete their comeback.
The result marked a response for Newcastle following their 4-1 defeat by Leeds United in their previous league match.
