NAFDAC Seizes Fake Antimalarial Drug in Kano

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized a suspected substandard and falsified antimalarial medicine, Artemether/Lumefantrine 80mg/480mg, purportedly manufactured by Bandaram Pharma Packleh Ltd (BPPL), India.

The agency disclosed this in Public Alert No. 042/2026, stating that its officials intercepted the product during routine Post-Market Surveillance at the Coordinated Wholesale Centre (CWC) in Kano State.

According to NAFDAC, verification revealed that the NAFDAC Registration Number, 02-3457, displayed on the product is fake and does not exist in the agency’s registration database.

The agency also noted that the product label does not contain the Marketing Authorisation Holder (MAH) information, further raising concerns about its authenticity and regulatory status.

NAFDAC classified the medicine as a Falsified (F) Medical Product, warning that the circulation and use of falsified Artemether/Lumefantrine could lead to treatment failure, worsening of malaria, development of drug resistance and other serious public health consequences.

The agency urged healthcare providers, importers, distributors, retailers, Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs) and members of the public to avoid purchasing, selling, supplying or using the affected product.

It advised Nigerians to obtain medicines only from authorised and licensed suppliers and carefully verify the authenticity of medicines before purchase and use.

NAFDAC further called on anyone who suspects the sale, distribution or use of falsified medicines to report to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322 or send an email to sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
