Army Probes Sexual Abuse Allegation Against Serving Captain

The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into an allegation of sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, attached to Headquarters 3 Division, Jos.

The Army disclosed this in a statement posted on its official Facebook page, saying it was aware of reports circulating online concerning the alleged incident.

It said appropriate steps had been initiated to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the matter.

The military stressed that allegations of sexual abuse, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons, were treated with utmost seriousness.

It, however, cautioned against reaching conclusions on the culpability or otherwise of the officer while the investigation is ongoing.

According to the Army, the investigation will be conducted in line with due process, fairness and the protection of the rights and dignity of all parties involved.

The Army also disclosed that relevant civil authorities were looking into the matter.

It pledged to cooperate fully with the civil authorities to ensure that the allegation was thoroughly and transparently investigated in accordance with extant laws and regulations.

The military said further comments on the matter would be guided by the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
