A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse in a drainage channel in Lagos State.
Monday was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, for allegedly dumping refuse into a drain during rainfall.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, saying the woman was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi.
According to the authority, Monday pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to one month in prison.
“ Nelly Monday, 53, who was arrested in Meiran on Wednesday, 9 September 2026 for dumping in the drains during the rain has been convicted of the offence.
“She was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to one month in prison,” LAWMA said.
The authority warned residents against indiscriminate disposal of refuse, particularly the practice of dumping waste in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
LAWMA described such acts as environmental offences punishable under Lagos State law.
It said enforcement agencies would continue to identify and sanction residents who violate approved waste disposal regulations.
“The Authority will continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos,” it said.
LAWMA urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly through approved channels, warning that blocked drains could worsen flooding during heavy rainfall.
The prosecution of Monday comes amid renewed efforts by the Lagos State Government and environmental authorities to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal and protect drainage infrastructure across the state.
