Global ride-hailing company, Uber, has announced the closure of its operations in Nigeria, ending its 12-year presence in the country's transportation sector.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the company said the decision followed a comprehensive review of its business operations and takes effect from September 2, 2026.
"After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026," the company said.
Uber, which launched its services in Lagos in 2014 before expanding to other cities, thanked customers for their patronage over the years.
"Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life, connecting you with independent transportation providers," the statement read.
The company expressed appreciation to riders who relied on its platform for daily commutes, business trips and other journeys.
"Whether it was a morning commute, a ride to see loved ones, or exploring the city, thank you for trusting the platform to connect you to a driver to get you there safely. We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience," Uber added.
The ride-hailing firm said it would work to support its drivers, riders and local employees during the transition period as it winds down operations.
Uber's exit marks the end of one of the pioneering digital ride-hailing services in Nigeria, where it helped transform urban transportation by introducing app-based taxi services and increasing competition in the mobility sector.
The company did not disclose the specific reasons for its decision to leave the Nigerian market.
