Authorities in California have launched a manhunt for a 38-year-old man and his 14-year-old daughter following the death of a newborn baby allegedly born from an incestuous relationship.
The Monterey County Sheriff's Office said the investigation began after the body of a newborn girl, identified as "Baby Angelita," was discovered by the roadside near Moss Landing on August 1.
Investigators said the infant still had her umbilical cord attached and showed signs of trauma, prompting a homicide investigation.
Police have issued arrest warrants for the teenager on a murder allegation, while her father, Sergio Galves Perez, is wanted on multiple charges, including incest. Authorities allege Perez is also the biological father of the deceased baby.
According to investigators, Perez allegedly impregnated his daughter when she was 13 years old and is now believed to be on the run with her.
Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto appealed to the public to help locate the teenager, stressing that she is also regarded as a victim who may be in danger.
She described Perez as a dangerous offender who had betrayed the trust expected of a parent.
Investigators said a major breakthrough came through the use of Flock licence plate recognition cameras, which identified a vehicle linked to the case and registered to Perez and his wife, Ofelia Garcia Ortega.
Ortega, 36, has since been arrested and charged with child endangerment in connection with the case.
Authorities said they remain concerned for the safety of the 14-year-old and urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of Perez or the teenager to contact law enforcement immediately.
The investigation into the death of Baby Angelita is ongoing.
