The Federal Government has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions across the country as part of efforts to strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, disclosed this while briefing journalists after the 158th National Economic Council (NEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja and chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Aiyedatiwa said the council received an update on the rehabilitation programme and was informed that contracts had been awarded for all 13 training institutions, with about 80 per cent of the contractors already receiving their award letters.
He explained that the rehabilitation is expected to be completed within three weeks to prepare the institutions for the commencement of police training programmes.
According to the governor, efforts are underway to fast-track the release of funds to enable contractors begin work immediately.
He stressed that improved training is critical to tackling the country\'s security challenges, noting that police personnel must continue to receive quality training regardless of ongoing discussions on state policing.
Aiyedatiwa added that the rehabilitation would provide the infrastructure and equipment needed to ensure police officers are adequately prepared for their responsibilities.
Also speaking, Enugu State Deputy Governor, Ifeanyi Ossai, said the Minister of Finance assured the council that funds for the projects would be released next week to facilitate the commencement of the rehabilitation works.
Ossai expressed confidence that the contractors would deliver the projects on schedule, adding that the government remains committed to sustained training and retraining of police personnel while urging Nigerians to continue supporting the police in their efforts to improve security.
