Amnesty Condemns Alleged Threat Against Non-APC Supporters in Kuje

Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned alleged comments attributed to the Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, over reported threats to expel residents who do not support or vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement posted on its official X account on Tuesday, the human rights organisation described the alleged remarks as an attack on citizens' rights to freedom of association and political choice.

Amnesty International said no Nigerian should be compelled to join or support any political party as a condition for residing in any community across the country.

The organisation characterised the alleged comments as a dangerous call that could incite violence and undermine democratic principles.

It called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to take proactive measures to prevent any attempt to intimidate or attack residents because of their political affiliations.

Amnesty International also urged the relevant authorities to investigate the allegations and hold the council chairman accountable if the reported threats are substantiated.

The organisation warned that acts of violence or intimidation based on political beliefs could threaten public safety and erode democratic values.

It reiterated that every Nigerian has the constitutional right to freely choose and support a political party without fear of harassment, discrimination or intimidation.
