President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to work with the Sokoto State Government to strengthen waterway safety following the deadly boat accident in Gorau Community, Goronyo Local Government Area.
The President gave the directive while reacting to the tragic incident, which claimed several lives and left others missing.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the relevant agencies must collaborate with the Sokoto State Government to ensure strict enforcement of safety regulations on inland waterways to prevent similar disasters.
He also commended emergency responders and local authorities for their prompt rescue and recovery efforts after the accident.
Expressing sadness over the tragedy, Tinubu extended his condolences to the bereaved families as well as the government and people of Sokoto State.
The President prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and asked God to grant their families the strength to bear the loss.
He also wished those injured in the incident a speedy recovery and assured the people of Sokoto State of the Federal Government's support in the aftermath of the disaster.
The directive comes amid growing concerns over recurring boat accidents across the country and renewed calls for stricter compliance with safety measures on Nigeria's inland waterways.
