Man Allegedly Sets Mother Ablaze Over Witchcraft Claim in Cross River

A man identified as Emmanuel Etim has allegedly set his mother, Mrs. Atim Eyo, on fire after accusing her of causing the death of his daughter through witchcraft in Ojuah, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident reportedly occurred on August 14, 2026, when the suspect allegedly visited his mother's residence carrying about four litres of petrol and a lighter following the death of his daughter earlier that day.

According to an eyewitness, Etim confronted his mother, accusing her of being responsible for the child's death before attempting to strangle her during an argument.

The witness said the victim managed to break free and tried to escape, but the suspect allegedly poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.

Neighbours quickly intervened, extinguished the fire and rushed the woman to a hospital, where she is receiving treatment.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the command had launched efforts to arrest the suspect, who remains at large.

"The unfortunate incident did occur as reported. The Police Command is making concerted efforts to apprehend the suspect to answer to the allegations against him," Eitokpah said.

He added that further details would be made available after the suspect's arrest and the completion of preliminary investigations.
