The Osun State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the fatal shooting of a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, following a security breach near the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo after a visit by Governor Ademola Adeleke and music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.
Police said the incident occurred on Wednesday at about 4 p.m. at Itaolokan area of Osogbo, where Yusuf, a resident of Oke-Ayepe, was allegedly shot by suspected hoodlums.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, preliminary findings revealed that Governor Adeleke, accompanied by his nephew, Davido, had earlier paid a courtesy visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.
The police alleged that after the visit, Adebayo Taoreed, also known as "Small Rugged," described as an ex-convict, suspected notorious thug and alleged member of the Eye Confraternity, attempted to gain access to Davido but was prevented by members of the singer's security team.
The command said the development triggered a confrontation that attracted other suspected gang members, who reportedly blocked the palace entrance and temporarily disrupted the movement of the convoy before it eventually left the area safely.
Police said the suspected hoodlums later left the vicinity and allegedly shot Yusuf while passing through the Itaolokan area.
Officers who responded to the scene found the victim in a pool of blood and rushed him to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.
The command said investigations have commenced and efforts have been intensified to identify and arrest the fleeing suspects.
Commissioner of Police (Election), CP Samuel Etaifo, condemned the killing and assured residents that all available resources would be deployed to bring those responsible to justice.
The police appealed to members of the public with useful information to report to the nearest police station or contact the command through its official channels, while urging residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
