Eight people, including a police inspector, have been killed in a suspected Boko Haram attack on Gaya community in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The attackers reportedly invaded the community on Monday night, killing residents and setting two houses ablaze before fleeing the area.
An eyewitness, Abdu Ahmadu, and the Chairman of Hong Local Government Area, Aliyu Sa'ad, confirmed the incident, saying the victims comprised seven civilians and a police inspector.
Following the attack, security operatives, including soldiers, police personnel, local hunters and vigilantes, were deployed to the community to pursue the fleeing attackers and restore normalcy.
Sa'ad expressed concern over the delay in operationalising the proposed military barracks in Garaha, noting that the facility would strengthen security in communities vulnerable to insurgent attacks.
He said the barracks would enhance the military's ability to respond swiftly to attacks along routes frequently used by insurgents linked to the Sambisa Forest.
The Adamawa State Police Command also confirmed the attack.
The command's spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said initial reports indicated that five bodies—four civilians and a police inspector—were recovered shortly after the attackers fled.
He added that security forces had launched a coordinated operation involving the military, police, vigilantes and local hunters to track down those responsible for the attack.
Nguroje said the police were awaiting further reports from the area and would provide additional updates as investigations and security operations continue.
