Rangers Pioneer Dominic Nwobodo Dies

Former Nigerian international and pioneer member of Rangers International Football Club, Dominic Nwobodo, popularly known as Alhaji Nwobodo, is dead.

His death was announced by the Ex-Rangers International Footballers Cooperative in a statement issued by its secretary, which said the football legend passed away at about 7 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026.

The cooperative described Nwobodo as one of the club's founding figures whose contributions as both a player and coach left a lasting impact on Rangers International and Nigerian football.

Renowned as a prolific attacker during his playing days in the 1970s, Nwobodo also represented Nigeria at the national level and remained committed to the development of the game long after retiring from active football.

He was also recognised as one of the founding fathers of the Ex-Rangers International Footballers Cooperative, where he continued to support the welfare of former players.

The association said his death was a painful loss to the Rangers family and the football community, noting that his dedication and service to the sport would always be remembered.

It extended condolences to his family, friends and members of the Rangers fraternity, praying for the repose of his soul and for strength for those he left behind.

The cooperative added that details of his burial arrangements would be announced by the family in due course.
