Former President Goodluck Jonathan has been conferred with the traditional title of Jigon Bauchi by the Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Sulaiman Adamu, in recognition of his contributions to democracy, peace and national unity.
The title was bestowed on the former Nigerian leader during a ceremony at the Emir's Palace in Bauchi on Tuesday as part of his official visit to the state.
Conferring the honour, the Emir described Jonathan as a patriotic leader whose commitment to democratic governance and peaceful coexistence has earned him widespread respect across the country.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who accompanied government officials and other dignitaries to the palace, commended the Emirate for recognising the former president's service to the nation.
According to the governor, the honour reflects Jonathan's enduring contributions to Nigeria's democratic development and efforts to foster unity among the country's diverse peoples.
In his acceptance remarks, Jonathan thanked the Emir and the people of Bauchi State for the honour, describing it as a privilege he would cherish.
He pledged to uphold the values, customs and traditions of the Bauchi Emirate and to preserve the dignity associated with the title of Jigon Bauchi.
Jonathan was in Bauchi on a two-day visit, during which he also participated in activities marking the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Democracy Dialogue.
The conferment further strengthens the former president's longstanding relationship with Bauchi State and its traditional institution.
