Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has highlighted the Nigeria Police Force's efforts in community protection, professional policing and the fight against violent crime during the second United States-Nigeria Country of Particular Concern (CPC) Joint Working Group meeting held in Washington, D.C.
The meeting, held on August 12, brought together senior officials from both countries to review progress made under the Joint Working Group Roadmap for the April to June 2026 reporting period and identify areas for stronger security cooperation.
Disu represented the Nigeria Police Force as part of the Nigerian delegation led by the National Security Adviser and comprising the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Interior and Defence, Service Chiefs, and heads of other security and law enforcement agencies.
Presenting the Force's achievements, the IGP outlined ongoing counter-kidnapping and anti-banditry operations, increased police deployment to vulnerable communities, improved early-warning mechanisms and measures aimed at protecting and facilitating the safe return of internally displaced persons.
He disclosed that specialised police formations were deployed to vulnerable local government areas during the reporting period to strengthen security and deter violent extremist and criminal groups.
The police chief also revealed that the recruitment of 50,000 police constables has reached the final pre-training stage, with arrangements in place for comprehensive training based on an improved curriculum and international best practices.
Disu said the Force has intensified community engagement by working closely with traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders to promote public trust, religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to lawful and professional investigations, the protection of civilians, respect for human rights and adherence to due process in the discharge of its duties.
According to him, the Force will continue to strengthen investigative capacity, enhance community policing and support Nigeria's broader counter-terrorism, criminal justice and rule-of-law objectives under the Joint Working Group Roadmap.
The statement was contained in a release issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, who said the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to professional policing and sustained collaboration with international partners to improve security across the country.
