The Rivers State Police Command has announced the commencement of strict enforcement of traffic laws across the state under Operation VELVET, beginning August 17, 2026.
The command said the exercise was being implemented in line with a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and was prompted by growing disregard for traffic regulations, which it said had contributed to gridlocks, obstruction of traffic flow and avoidable risks to road users.
The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Commanders to ensure effective enforcement of the operation within their respective areas of responsibility.
Under the exercise, traffic offenders may face sanctions provided by law, including arrest, vehicle impoundment and prosecution where necessary.
Adepoju, however, warned police personnel deployed for the operation against extortion, harassment, intimidation, abuse of office and other forms of misconduct.
The commissioner directed officers to conduct the exercise professionally and within the confines of the law, while respecting the fundamental rights and dignity of members of the public.
He warned that officers found guilty of extortion, brutality, misconduct or abuse of office would face disciplinary action.
Adepoju also urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcyclists and other road users to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with police officers during the exercise.
The command said members of the public could report traffic-related emergencies, extortion, human rights violations or police misconduct through its Complaint Response Unit on 07057605209, 07057605256, 08120822987 and 07072323049.
The Police Control Room can also be reached on 08032003514.
The command said Operation VELVET was aimed at promoting safer roads, improving traffic flow and ensuring effective policing across Rivers State.
