Jorge Messi, father and longtime representative of Argentina captain Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68.
Jorge died on Friday night at a medical clinic in Rosario, Argentina, after a prolonged illness, according to reports from Argentine media and other international outlets.
He was married to Celia Cuccittini, with whom he had four children — Lionel, Rodrigo, MatÃas and MarÃa Sol.
Jorge played a pivotal role in Lionel Messi’s emergence from a promising youngster at Newell’s Old Boys into one of football’s greatest stars.
When the young Messi required growth hormone treatment, Jorge helped secure the medical care that became crucial to his development. After difficulties obtaining the treatment in Argentina, he supported Lionel’s move to Barcelona at the age of 13.
Jorge remained with his son during the early and challenging years in Spain, while the rest of the family stayed in Rosario.
Reflecting on those difficult years, Messi recalled how his father asked whether he wanted to continue pursuing his football dream in Spain or return home.
Messi chose to stay, and Jorge remained by his side as his career at Barcelona began to flourish.
Beyond his role as a father, Jorge became Messi’s longtime representative and was closely involved in managing his son’s professional affairs and commercial interests. He generally maintained a low public profile despite the enormous global attention surrounding his son.
Jorge’s health became a subject of concern during the 2026 World Cup after Messi became emotional following Argentina’s opening match. The footballer later indicated that his emotions were linked to difficult family circumstances.
The Messi family subsequently confirmed that Jorge was receiving medical care and asked for privacy concerning his condition.
Before becoming involved in his son’s football career, Jorge trained as a chemical technician and worked for Argentine steel company Acindar, eventually rising to a managerial position.
He had also played football in his youth, featuring as a midfielder in Newell’s youth system before leaving the sport after being called up for military service.
Jorge’s death brings to an end the life of a man who largely operated away from the spotlight but played a defining role in one of football’s most remarkable stories.
His influence extended beyond contract negotiations and career management. For Lionel Messi, he was the father who stood beside him during the uncertainty of his formative years and helped him pursue a dream that ultimately transformed the world of football.
Jorge Messi is survived by his wife, children and other members of the Messi family.
