Gunmen have abducted three students of the Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State, with police successfully rescuing one of the victims during an ongoing search-and-rescue operation.
The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel.
According to the police, the abduction occurred on Tuesday night at Living Seed Lodge, a student accommodation located in a bushy area on the outskirts of the university community in Lafia.
The command disclosed that the university's Chief Security Officer alerted the police at about 9:20 p.m., reporting that heavily armed men had stormed the lodge and whisked away three students to an unknown destination.
Following the distress call, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, directed the immediate deployment of tactical teams, patrol operatives and other security personnel to the area to track down the kidnappers and rescue the victims.
The police said the swift security operation led to the rescue of one of the abducted students, while efforts have been intensified to secure the safe release of the remaining two victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
The command assured residents and the university community that the operation is ongoing and urged members of the public to remain calm while providing useful information that could assist security agencies in rescuing the remaining students and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
