Haaland's Double Sends Norway Into World Cup Quarter-finals

Erling Haaland delivered another masterclass as Norway stunned Brazil 2-1 to secure a historic place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The prolific striker scored twice to inspire the Scandinavian side to their first-ever World Cup quarter-final, taking his tournament tally to seven goals and drawing level with Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

Brazil had the opportunity to seize an early advantage after Kristoffer Ajer fouled Matheus Cunha inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, but Bruno Guimaraes failed to convert as Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland produced an excellent low save.

Nyland continued his impressive display before the break, making crucial stops to deny Gabriel Martinelli and Vinicius Junior as Norway held firm despite sustained Brazilian pressure.

Brazil introduced teenage forward Endrick at the start of the second half, but the substitute squandered a golden opportunity less than a minute after coming on. Released by a precise pass from Vinicius Junior, Endrick's heavy first touch allowed Nyland to close down the angle before the youngster fired wide.

The Norwegian goalkeeper remained in inspired form, frustrating Rayan and Guimaraes with two more excellent saves to keep the contest goalless.

Norway finally broke the deadlock midway through the second half through Haaland. Substitute Andreas Schjelderup raced down the left flank and delivered a pinpoint cross for the striker, who powered a downward header beyond Brazil goalkeeper Alisson.

Haaland sealed victory moments before full-time, calmly guiding his shot through Danilo's legs and past Alisson to spark wild celebrations among the Norwegian supporters.

Brazil pulled one back deep into stoppage time when Neymar converted a penalty, but the goal proved only a consolation as the five-time champions suffered their earliest World Cup exit since 1990.

The victory sends Norway into the last eight, where they will face the winners of the Round of 16 clash between England and Mexico in Miami on July 11, as Ståle Solbakken's men continue their remarkable World Cup campaign.
