The ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 witnessed record-breaking attendance and dramatic group-stage conclusions as Côte d’Ivoire, Ecuador, Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, and Australia booked places in the knockout phase, alongside other qualifiers.
A total attendance of 3,605,357 was recorded during the opening fixture in New York/New Jersey, setting a new all-time World Cup aggregate attendance record, surpassing the previous mark set at USA 1994.
Côte d’Ivoire made history by advancing beyond the group stage for the first time after defeating Curaçao 2–0 in Philadelphia. Nicolas Pépé scored twice, including an early opener, to seal the Elephants’ progression.
In a major upset, Ecuador stunned Germany 2–1 in New York/New Jersey, recovering from an early setback to secure only their second-ever qualification into the knockout rounds.
The Netherlands topped Group F with a 3–1 victory over Tunisia in Kansas City. An own goal and a strike from Brian Brobbey set them on course before Jan Paul van Hecke sealed the result. The Dutch now face Morocco in the Round of 32.
Japan also progressed after a 1–1 draw with Sweden in Dallas. Daizen Maeda’s second-half goal was cancelled out by Anthony Elanga, but the result was enough for Japan to finish second, while Sweden advanced as one of the best third-placed teams.
Australia secured a second consecutive knockout qualification after a goalless draw with Paraguay in San Francisco Bay Area. The Socceroos held firm in a cautious contest to finish as Group D runners-up.
In a thrilling encounter in Los Angeles, hosts United States fell 3–2 to Türkiye despite taking an early lead. Auston Trusty opened the scoring, but Türkiye responded through Arda Güler, Barış Alper Yılmaz, and a stoppage-time winner from Kaan Ayhan. However, the USA still topped their group and advanced.
The results set up an exciting Round of 32 as the tournament enters its decisive knockout phase.
