The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) rank conferred on renowned lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, pending the outcome of ongoing disciplinary proceedings against him.
The decision was announced on Wednesday in a statement issued in Abuja by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir Akanbi.
According to the statement, the suspension was approved in line with Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and other matters relating to the prestigious title.
Akanbi explained that the action would remain in force pending the final determination of disciplinary proceedings currently before the LPPC’s Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee, as well as other related proceedings.
The committee said the measure was necessary to preserve the integrity, dignity and prestige associated with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria while the allegations under review are being considered.
As part of the suspension, Ozekhome has been directed to refrain from presenting or holding himself out as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria until the disciplinary process is concluded.
“The suspension is intended to safeguard the integrity, dignity and prestige of the rank of SAN while due consideration is given to the matters under review,” the statement said.
The LPPC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of ethics, professionalism and discipline within the legal profession.
It added that the committee would continue to take steps aimed at ensuring that the SAN rank retains public confidence, credibility and respect.
No further details were provided regarding the nature of the disciplinary proceedings against the senior lawyer.
