The United States authorities have deported a Nigerian national, Ayodeji Ajayi, following multiple criminal convictions, including domestic violence, as part of ongoing efforts to remove non-citizens with criminal records from the country.
The deportation was disclosed by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a statement published on its official social media platform on Tuesday. According to the agency, Ajayi entered the United States in 2007 on a student visa but allegedly remained in the country unlawfully after discontinuing his studies.
ICE stated that Ajayi failed to depart the United States after leaving school and subsequently accumulated a criminal record spanning several offences. The agency identified convictions for domestic violence, trespassing, intimidation and obstruction among the crimes attributed to him.
In addition to the convictions, immigration authorities said Ajayi's criminal history included charges related to kidnapping, rape and family neglect. However, the agency did not provide further details regarding the circumstances of the cases, the locations where the offences occurred, or the outcomes of the additional charges.
The agency linked the deportation to the immigration enforcement policies of US President Donald Trump, emphasizing the administration's commitment to removing undocumented immigrants with criminal backgrounds from the country.
In its statement, ICE noted that Ajayi's removal formed part of broader enforcement actions targeting individuals deemed to be in violation of immigration laws and public safety regulations.
While confirming the deportation, the agency did not specify the exact date the removal was carried out. It also withheld further information about the legal proceedings that led to Ajayi's deportation.
The development comes amid intensified immigration enforcement measures across the United States, with federal authorities continuing to prioritize the identification, detention and removal of undocumented immigrants convicted of criminal offences.
