The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered an immediate nationwide enforcement campaign against vehicles operating without registration number plates or those using concealed, altered, defaced, or obscured registration numbers.
The directive was issued during the monthly conference of senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
According to the IGP, the increasing number of vehicles plying roads without proper registration poses a significant threat to public safety and national security. He noted that vehicle registration remains a vital tool for crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and effective law enforcement.
Disu stated that criminal elements often exploit unregistered or improperly identified vehicles to commit crimes and evade security agencies, making strict enforcement necessary across the country.
He subsequently directed all Commissioners of Police, Tactical Commanders, and Heads of Police Formations to commence immediate operations targeting offending vehicles. Under the directive, any vehicle found without approved registration plates or bearing tampered registration details will be stopped, impounded, and subjected to the relevant legal procedures.
The police chief urged motorists to comply fully with vehicle registration regulations, warning that no individual or group would receive preferential treatment during the enforcement exercise. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to enhancing public safety, supporting national security efforts, and implementing lawful measures aimed at preventing crime and protecting citizens.
