A wave of fear and uncertainty has swept through Iluke Bunu community in Kogi State following a deadly attack by suspected bandits that left a school vice principal dead and several students reportedly abducted.

The victim, identified as Mr. Gani Anifowose, Vice Principal of Government Secondary School, Iluke, was allegedly killed when armed attackers invaded the community on Wednesday morning.

Residents said the attack has heightened insecurity in the area, leaving many families in panic as concerns grow over the safety of lives and property.

In a related development, students from three neighbouring communities who were scheduled to sit for the English Language paper of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) were reportedly abducted amid the violence.

The reported abduction has raised fresh concerns about the vulnerability of schools, students and teachers in communities facing persistent security threats.

Community leaders and residents have appealed to security agencies to urgently intervene, restore normalcy and ensure the safe rescue of the abducted victims.

A representative of the community association expressed frustration over what was described as a delayed security response despite repeated distress calls.

“An hour is gone and there is no sign of rescue efforts from the security agencies despite several calls for help. We urge citizens to remain calm and continue praying for divine intervention, protection and lasting peace in our communities,” the representative said.

The latest incident adds to growing concerns over the security situation in parts of Kogi State, where residents have repeatedly called for stronger measures to protect communities from attacks by armed groups.

As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the attack or confirm the number of persons abducted. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
