Nigeria’s para badminton sensation, Eniola Bolaji, has claimed the top spot in the women’s SL3 category in the latest rankings released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Bolaji secured the world No. 1 ranking following her silver medal performance at the 2026 World Para Badminton Championship in Bahrain. She was narrowly defeated 2–0 (21–12, 21–17) by Japan’s Shino Kawai, ranked world No. 7, in the final held at New Capital Hall on February 14.

The multiple national and African champion displaced Indonesia’s Qonitah Ikhtiar Syakuroh to become the highest-ranked player globally in her category. Her ascent was further strengthened by her successful title defence at the Egypt International in January, marking back-to-back victories.

Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, described Bolaji’s achievement as a historic milestone for both Nigeria and Africa. “This feat reflects the deliberate investment and structured support for para badminton in the country,” he said.

Orbih highlighted Bolaji’s resilience and dedication, noting that she became the first African to win a silver medal at the Para Badminton World Championship. He also credited key stakeholders—including the National Sports Commission, Abia State Government, and GIG Logistics—for supporting the growth of para badminton in Nigeria.

“The federation will continue to provide full support as she prepares for upcoming tournaments. We are confident she will continue to make Nigeria and Africa proud,” Orbih added.

Bolaji’s rise to world No. 1 is a testament to her skill, determination, and consistency, cementing her status as one of the leading figures in global para badminton.
