Rivers Police Arrest Landlord over Alleged Deroofing of Tenant’s Home

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a Ghanaian national, Mr. Frimpong Samuel, over the alleged removal of the roof of an apartment occupied by his tenant in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The incident reportedly took place at No. 7 Chief Chike Street, off NTA Road, Mgbuoba, following a disagreement between the landlord and his tenant, Mr. Anozie Tochukwu, over the tenant’s continued stay after the expiration of his rent.

Sources said the landlord had earlier issued a quit notice to the tenant towards the end of 2025, explaining that he intended to renovate the property and would not renew the rent, which expired in January 2026. The tenant was said to have pleaded for an additional 14 days to enable him secure alternative accommodation.

However, on the morning of February 3, 2026, Tochukwu’s wife allegedly alerted him that the roof of their apartment had been removed. A heavy rainfall shortly afterwards reportedly flooded the apartment, damaging several household items and personal belongings.

The tenant claimed that furniture, household appliances, important documents and other personal effects were destroyed by the rain, while some items were allegedly missing after the incident. He further alleged that his pregnant wife and their two young children were exposed to the harsh weather conditions.

Following a report lodged at the Ozuoba Police Division, officers of the command moved in and arrested the suspect.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the landlord was in custody and investigations were ongoing.

She stated that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
