The Anambra State Government has announced the reopening of the Onitsha Main Market after it was shut for seven days.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the state government said the closure order expired at the weekend, directing that the market be reopened on Monday, February 2, 2026, for normal business activities.
The announcement was contained in a press release signed by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, who said all traders were expected to return to the market and resume their lawful businesses.
According to the statement, the closure of the market was ordered by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo as part of measures to enforce compliance with government directives and restore normal economic activities.
The government reiterated that there was no longer any form of sit-at-home on Mondays in Anambra State, assuring residents and traders of adequate security across the state.

The government also reminded civil servants and teachers that the pro-rata salary system remains in effect, stressing that failure to report to work on Mondays would attract loss of pay.
In addition, parents were warned to ensure that their children attend school on Mondays, noting that sanctions would be imposed on defaulters.
The reopening of the Onitsha Main Market is expected to ease economic activities and restore normal trading operations in the commercial hub.
