The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibril Ismail Falgore, alongside 21 other lawmakers, has resigned from the New Nigeria Peopleβs Party (NNPP).
Also affected by the defection are the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Butu-Butu; the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussain; the Deputy Majority Leader, Garba Fammar; and the Chief Whip, Muddasir Zawachiki.
The lawmakers, despite leaving the NNPP, declared their continued support and loyalty to Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Press Secretary of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kamaludden Shawai, and made available to journalists in Kano.
According to the statement, the defecting lawmakers represent constituencies including Ajingi, Albasu, Bagwai/Shanono, Bebeji, Bunkure, Dawakin Kudu, Fagge, Gabasawa, Garko, Gwale, Karaye, Kura/Garun Malam, Madobi, Minjibir, Rano, Tarauni and Wudil.
Shawai confirmed that a total of 22 members of the House were involved in the political realignment.
He added that the leadership of the Assembly had verified and authenticated the list of the affected lawmakers as released to the public.
The Assembly explained that the announcement was necessary to clearly inform the public of the lawmakersβ current political status, following the recent resignation of Governor Yusuf from the NNPP.
