The Niger State Police Command has confirmed that six persons were killed by suspected bandits during an attack on Damala village, via Wawa in New Bussa, Borgu Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Saturday.
According to Abiodun, the attack occurred on Thursday at about noon when a farmer identified as Deshi and his son, both residents of Wawa, were ambushed while travelling to their farm in Damala village, an area close to the Wawa National Park forest.
He said the son managed to escape from the attack and returned home, where he raised the alarm and informed family members and other residents of the community.
Abiodun explained that relatives of the farmer, accompanied by local vigilante members, later mobilised to the area in search of Deshi but were also attacked by the assailants.
He added that security operatives were deployed to the scene on Friday at about 9:00 a.m., where the bodies of six victims were recovered.
The police said investigations into the incident have commenced, while efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks in the area.
